There’s just something about the sci-fi genre that feels electric. I know that when I watch a classic movie like “The Matrix” or something more suspenseful like “Gravity,” everything around me becomes nonexistent. However, delving into darker territory is sometimes the way to go, and grim sci-fi films tend to do this very well.
From adventures in the dark depths of space to a disturbing dystopian world full of mysterious secrets, there really is so much to experience and not enough time in the day to do it. What’s even better (for me) is that some dark sci-fi films introduce a mix of exciting horror tropes, and Prime Video is the perfect place for that.

‘Aliens’
Following the events of the first “Alien” film, this sequel takes place nearly six decades later. Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) has been in stasis for all these years aboard an escape shuttle, but is fortunately found by a deep space rescue team. Now, after being debriefed by the Weyland-Yutani Corporation, she discovers that a terraforming colony has suddenly gone silent on exomoon LV-426. Deciding to join the investigation, Ripley once again finds herself thrown into a dangerous pickle when she is confronted by the terrifying aliens roaming the colony. And if it wasn’t dark enough, throw away the mufflers that attach to your face.

“Ghost in the Shell”
Harking back to an old Japanese animation, “Ghost in the Shell” focuses on cyborg federal agent Major. Motoko Kusanagi (Mimi Woods), who wants to hunt down “The Puppet Master” (Abe Lasser), a computer hacking expert capable of accessing the computerized minds of cyborg-human hybrids. Kusanagi, somewhat curious about man’s ability to change the appearance of hybrids, begins to doubt her own identity and questions the benefits of having more human traits. However, the investigation takes a different direction when Kusanagi’s curiosity gets the better of her.
The looming darkness of this science fiction film comes from the danger of relying on technology. Kusanagi’s struggle with his own humanity is another contributor to the film’s dark and disturbing narrative.

‘A silent place’
Another dark sci-fi film with horror elements is “A Quiet Place”. In a post-apocalyptic world, we follow a family who lives in silence to avoid alien creatures that hunt using sound. Making too much noise, even through a whisper or a step, will attract their attention and it will be impossible to outrun them. Lee (John Krasinski) and Evelyn (Emily Blunt) will do anything to protect their children, but with Evelyn pregnant, navigating this changed world will become even more difficult for the family. As the film’s tagline says: “If they hear you, they chase you.”

‘Stalker’
For those who love strange and disturbing films made before the 2000s, then “Stalker” is the perfect choice. This dark science fantasy art film follows a character known as Stalker (Alexander Kaidanovsky) who leads a writer (Anatoly Solonitsyn) and a professor (Nikolai Grinko) through a dangerous wasteland known as the “Zone “. Venturing into this mysterious restricted site will lead you to The Room, another strange place believed to fulfill a person’s deepest, darkest desires. The secrecy and disquiet in this film makes the story much darker.

“Birth/Rebirth”
“Birth/Rebirth” is a film that dips its toes into several genres, the biggest being horror, thriller, and science fiction. But what makes this story so dark is its ability to push the boundaries of science fiction in the exploration of modern identity. The plot follows morgue technician Rose (Marin Ireland) as she successfully resuscitates a little girl named Lila, who is the daughter of a maternity nurse named Celie. When Celie discovers her daughter is alive again, she works with Rose to harvest biological material that will allow Lila to breathe, but this begins to blur the line between what is right and wrong.
